Pool Chemistry Order of Operations
Most people fighting their pool are adjusting things in the wrong order — fixing pH before alkalinity, or chasing chlorine before stabilizer. Balance the numbers in sequence and each one holds; do it out of order and you'll keep undoing your own work. Here's the order that actually works.
1. Total alkalinity — the foundation
Alkalinity is pH's shock absorber. Set it first, because if it's off, pH won't hold no matter what you do. Aim for roughly 80–120 ppm. Too low and pH bounces on everything; too high and pH drifts up and clouds the water. Get it in range with the alkalinity calculator before touching anything else.
2. pH — now it will actually stay put
With alkalinity buffering it, pH becomes easy to set and keep. Target 7.4–7.6: comfortable for swimmers and the range where chlorine works efficiently. 3. Calcium hardness — protect the surface
Calcium is slower-moving, so it comes after the pH pair. Too low and soft water etches plaster and grout; too high and you get scale. Vinyl and fiberglass pools can relax here; plaster and heated pools care more. Set it with the calcium hardness calculator and it'll mostly stay put for the season.
4. Cyanuric acid — before you chase chlorine
Set stabilizer before you fuss over chlorine, because CYA determines how much chlorine you even need. Aim for 30–50 ppm in most outdoor pools. This is the step people skip, then wonder why their chlorine won't hold — dial it in with the CYA calculator first.
5. Chlorine — last, and matched to your CYA
Only now do you set chlorine, because the right level depends on the CYA you just set (roughly 7.5% of it). Dose it with the chlorine calculator and it'll finally behave, because everything underneath it is already in range. That's the whole trick: chlorine is the last domino, not the first.
Why the order matters
Each step sets up the next: alkalinity stabilizes pH, pH lets chlorine work, CYA decides how much chlorine you need. Jump straight to chlorine on an unbalanced pool and you'll burn through it fighting problems that a $5 bag of baking soda would have prevented. Balance the base, and the pool mostly runs itself.
