Why Your Pool Keeps Losing Chlorine
You dose correctly, and by the next day it's gone again. Chlorine that won't hold is the single most common pool frustration, and it almost always comes down to one of four causes. Here's how to figure out which one is draining yours — before you waste another jug.
Cause 1: Low stabilizer (the usual suspect)
This is the #1 reason by far. Without enough cyanuric acid, sunlight destroys chlorine in hours — you can add a perfect dose in the morning and test zero by evening. Cause 2: Algae eating it (even invisible algae)
Algae consumes chlorine as it grows — and it starts long before the water looks green. A pool that holds chlorine fine, then suddenly can't, often has an early bloom feeding on it. Cause 3: High chlorine demand (bathers, heat, rain)
Chlorine gets used up by whatever it sanitizes: sweat, sunscreen, and organic debris from swimmers, plus pollen and leaves. A hot week, a pool party, or a storm dumping debris all spike demand temporarily. This one is normal and self-correcting — just dose to keep up using the chlorine calculator until the load passes.
Cause 4: Phosphates feeding the problem
Phosphates are algae food. They don't consume chlorine directly, but high levels let algae recover fast from every small dip, so your chlorine is always fighting uphill. How to diagnose yours in one test
Run the overnight chlorine loss test: dose in the evening, test free chlorine, cover nothing, and retest at dawn before the sun hits. Lose more than ~1 ppm overnight (with no sunlight involved) and something is consuming it — algae or demand, not UV. Lose it only during the day and your stabilizer is the problem.
