The salt cell lifespan math

Cells wear by generating hours, not calendar time — which is why the same cell lasts 7 years on a 5-month northern season and 3 years running year-round in Phoenix. Your output percentage matters too: a cell at 50% output generates half the hours the pump runs.

A worked example

A $650 cell rated 10,000 hours, generating 6 hours a day across a 6-month season: about 1,095 hours a year, so ~9 years of expected life — $71 per year of ownership, or $6 a month to set aside. The same cell in a 12-month climate lasts ~4.5 years and costs $142 a year: knowing your number turns a surprise $650 bill into a boring budget line.

Replace, or is it just scale?

Half of "dead" cells are actually scaled plates or chronically low salt. Before spending hundreds: test salt with a proper kit (not the unit's own reading — a drifting sensor is itself a symptom), inspect the plates for white crust, and clean per the manual if scaled.
